In August of 2010, Rick Nuckolls and Ron Hawkins produced the first Blacktop Nationals to treat their hometown to a national car and motorcycle event. They created the event to appeal to people of all ages, with family-friendly entertainment, food and drink alongside first-class displays and activities for the vehicle enthusiast. Today the event features all of the elements that Nuckolls and Hawkins envisioned and more, thanks to presenting sponsor Midwest Ford Dealers.
After the 2015 event, as Nuckolls made plans to move to the Kansas City area for family, his passion for classic cars and love of Blacktop Nationals drove him to seek a way to keep the event alive and growing. Wichita Festivals, Inc., producing organization of Riverfest, was brought on board to plan and run the event, now owned by Midwest Ford Dealers. The decision was made to bring Blacktop Nationals to Riverfest, making it possible for the two events to share resources and enhancing both the Riverfest experience and the Blacktop experience for all who attend.
Your $10 (for adults, $3 for kids) Riverfest button is all you need for admission to Blacktop this year. No additional fees are required to see any of the exhibits, whether inside Century II’s Bob Brown Expo Hall, outside in adjacent lots or on Main Street. Blacktop events take place the latter half of Riverfest. The Ford Motor Company’s exciting Ride-and-Drive attraction opens up on Main Street Wednesday, June 8; indoor displays – including the Ford Mustang Dyno Drag, vendor booths and The Admiral’s Collection (formerly the Million $ Car Display) – begin June 9 in Expo Hall; and the outdoor car show and competition takes place June 10-11 on Main Street and the large parking lot east of Expo Hall.
Thank you for joining us for the 7th year of a Wichita tradition that celebrates our vibrant classic car community!
